What Is Problem Solving Math Coach S Corner Problem solving is often described as figuring out what to do when you don’t know what to do. my power went out unexpectedly this morning, and i have work to do. that’s a problem that i had to solve. i had to think about what the problem was, what my options were, and formulate a plan to solve the problem. no keywords. You see, true problem solving is messy and goes way beyond solving word problems. george polya is often called the father of problem solving. in 1945, he outlined a 4 step process for solving problems in his ground breaking book how to solve it. you can see the four steps pictured below. now think about the process i went through while solving.

What Is Problem Solving Math Coach S Corner To begin the 3 reads protocol, the teacher presents the students with a problem, and the class reads the problem together. probably the easiest way to do this is with a powerpoint or google slides file. notice that with the first read, there are no numbers and no question. we just want the students to understand what the story is about and make.
