Repair Guides Engine coolant temperature (ect) sensor problem. i replaced the engine coolant temperature (ect) sensor on 2001 excursion 7.3l powerstroke and the factory temp gauge stays bottomed out at "c". the sensor is new and it seems to work fine at running temperature the new sensor reads 3.66kohms. when engine is cool it reads somewhere around 8.0kohms. Fuel injected engines have 2 temp units ect sensor, 5volt, 2 wire, only used by the engine computer temp sender, 12volt, usually 1 wire, can be 2, only used by dash board temp gauge they look similar but are not at all the same most parts stores will send you away with an ect sensor, lol you often have to spell it for them, s e n d e r, sender. 2364 posts · joined 2013. #2 · mar 19, 2018. the coolant temp sensor is at the top of the water pump. however, it only sends a signal to the dummy gauge on the dash. the reading that you are seeing on your diagnostic tool is an erroneous measurement and means nothing. the pcm controls the engine looking at oil temp only and has no reference. 11286 posts · joined 2009. #4 · mar 16, 2012. the stock coolant gauge will show 'normal' at about 150*f or so. maybe a touch less. so the thermo is probably stuck closed, or the ect sensor is bad but doubtful. if you're in there doing the thermo, i'd do a good flush and swap over to elc with a cat ec 1 rating.
