Black Hole Reviews Tentacles 1977 Suckered Me Thirty Years Ago Tentacles, one of the countless post jaws killer animal films, climaxes with the killing of a gigantic octopus by two orcas—in a scene that features the real killing of a real octopus. as bad as this is, it is even worse in context, since so many of tentacles ’ effects are so obviously phony; by which i don’t mean they are, obviously. Tentacles (italian: tentacoli) is a 1977 horror thriller film directed by ovidio g. assonitis and starring john huston, shelley winters, bo hopkins, cesare danova, delia boccardo and henry fonda. when numerous people go missing in a seaside resort town, a reporter discovers that a rampaging giant octopus is terrorizing the coast.

The first thing we see is a view of the ocean from shore, with the words samuel z. arkoff presents.tell me that that doesn’t bode well. as the credits unfold, it is soon apparent that our view of the sea is presented to us from the vantage point of a moving vehicle, for soon the scenery changes, the landscape sliding past us, with parked cars in the foreground. Tentacles, a low budget rip off of jaws, made two years later with a giant octopus replacing the shark, appears to be about as hollywood as you can get from moment one. the mgm lion roars, then samuel z arkoff of american international presents john huston, shelley winters and bo hopkins with a special appearance by henry fonda, all major names. It’s dull. a dull story, dull characters, dull visuals and a dull resolution. the only thing that isn’t dull is the wacky disco synth soundtrack. though even that gets so overplayed, it starts to grate. the writing for the movie is a massive part of the problem but don’t be fooled by the impressive cast list, no one’s putting in much.
